Baccarat compares two hands, labelled Player and Banker, with the winning total closest to nine. In the standard punto banco format, you choose a betting position and the drawing rules do the rest. You do not make blackjack-style hit or stand decisions.

The useful comparison is the payout structure: commission, treatment of particular Banker wins, Tie returns and any side bets. This guide explains the scoring and deal before comparing versions and four general casino welcome packages.

How baccarat scoring works

Aces count as one. Number cards two through nine have their printed values. Tens, jacks, queens and kings count as zero. Add the cards and keep only the final digit: seven plus eight is 15, so the hand total is five.

Player

You back the hand labelled Player to finish with the higher total. It is not a personal hand that you decide how to play.

Banker

You back the hand labelled Banker. Winning profit can be subject to commission or a version-specific payout condition.

Tie

You back both final totals being equal. It is a separate bet with its own payout, distinct from a push on the main positions.

Read the final digit

A nine and a king total nine. A seven and an eight total five. A six, a four and a nine total nine, because 19 becomes nine. The total can fall when another card is added: six plus seven becomes three.

The cards do not bust as they do in blackjack. A total above nine is reduced by keeping its final digit. Nine is the highest possible baccarat total.

The BCLC baccarat rules provide a formal reference for standard scoring and settlement. The rules displayed by your actual game remain the reference for its particular version.

When a third card is dealt

Standard punto banco begins with two cards for each hand. If either opening total is eight or nine, it is a natural and neither hand draws. Otherwise the drawing sequence follows fixed rules, with Player resolved first.

Player’s drawing rule

Player draws on an opening total of zero through five and stands on six or seven. If Player stands, Banker draws on zero through five and stands on six or seven. These instructions apply after the natural check.

Banker after Player draws

When Player receives a third card, Banker’s action depends on its own opening total and the value of that third card:

Banker 0–2

Draws regardless of Player’s third-card value.

Banker 3

Draws unless Player’s third card is eight.

Banker 4

Draws when Player’s third card is two through seven.

Banker 5

Draws when Player’s third card is four through seven.

Banker 6

Draws when Player’s third card is six or seven.

Banker 7

Stands. Opening totals of eight and nine have already ended drawing through the natural rule.

In this sequence, a ten or picture card has value zero. BetMGM’s live baccarat rules outline the fixed third-card process. Historical baccarat formats and feature games should not automatically be assumed to use the same instructions.

You do not need to decide which of these draws is best. Understanding the sequence helps you follow the round and distinguish standard punto banco from a version that changes the rules.

Baccarat payouts: three worked examples

Profit is the amount above your stake; total return includes the original stake coming back. The following calculations illustrate common stated payout structures rather than quote a verified table at one of the casinos below.

Player at 1:1

A winning $20 Player bet earns $20 profit and returns $40 in total, including the original stake.

Banker with 5% commission

A winning $20 Banker bet earns $20 before a $1 commission deduction: $19 net profit and $39 returned in total.

Tie at 8:1

A winning $2 Tie bet earns $16 profit and returns $18 in total where the paytable states 8:1.

On a conventional commission table, a tied result normally pushes the Player and Banker main bets. It does not make them winning even-money bets. Any separately placed Tie wager is settled using its own paytable.

A large Tie or side-bet payout is not enough to compare value. Its probability and any qualifying conditions matter too. A payout ratio describes the award when the bet wins, not how frequently that happens.

Add every wager in the round

If you put $10 on Player and $2 on Tie, the total stake is $12. With standard settlement, a Player win returns $20 while the Tie stake loses, giving $8 net profit across the layout. If Tie wins at 8:1, the $10 main stake pushes and the Tie returns $18, giving $16 net profit overall.

Commission and no-commission baccarat

In a standard commission format, the stated deduction applies to winning Banker profit. Check the percentage and whether the game collects it immediately or records it using another documented process. Do not subtract it from Player winnings unless the rules explicitly require that.

What “no commission” can change

Removing a routine deduction can be paired with a different settlement for specific outcomes. Evolution’s No Commission Baccarat, for example, pays a winning Banker six at 0.5:1 rather than ordinary even money.

Under that stated rule, a winning $20 Banker bet on six earns $10 profit and returns $30 in total. A $20 Banker win subject to a 5% commission would instead earn $19 profit. Compare the entire game, not just the absence of a commission label.

Other variants may use different push, half-pay or special-outcome rules. A familiar name such as “no commission” does not identify every payout condition. Read the main-game paytable and any side-bet terms separately.

Four casino welcome packages

These are general promotions, not verified baccarat-specific bonuses. Their free-spin components apply to designated pokies or an allocated game selection. Check that the account actually offers your chosen baccarat version and that the promotion permits it.

Live, RNG and speed formats

Live baccarat

A streamed game shows a dealer and cards, with digital betting positions. Confirm the betting deadline, accepted stake and recorded final result. Visual presentation does not remove the need to read the payout rules.

Software baccarat

An RNG version uses a software-generated game. Check its documented card-generation or dealing arrangement and the game help. Do not infer a continuing physical shoe from the animation alone.

Speed and squeeze presentation

A speed format can shorten the time between rounds. A squeeze presentation reveals cards more gradually. Neither label, by itself, confirms a different scoring system or better return. Evolution describes Speed Baccarat as a faster alternative to its standard game; the actual table rules still need checking.

On a phone, make sure the selected position, chip amount and total stake are visible before the betting window closes. Rebet controls can repeat an entire layout, including side bets. See the mobile guide for device considerations.

Baccarat bonus eligibility and account limits

A casino can list baccarat for cash play while excluding it from a particular coupon. An allowed game can have a reduced wagering contribution, and some promotions restrict opposing wagers or particular versions.

If a hypothetical bonus requires $200 of credited wagering and an allowed game counts at 10%, $2,000 of qualifying stakes would be required under that simplified rule. A prohibited game is not an alternative route to completing the target and may breach the promotion.

Check the maximum bet, expiry, withdrawal cap and balance treatment before playing with bonus credit. The bonus hub and deposit-match guide cover those account conditions.

Road maps and staking systems

History displays organise earlier Player, Banker and Tie results. They do not turn a visible pattern into a guaranteed forecast. A staking progression changes the amount committed; it does not control the next cards or remove the game’s underlying advantage.

Set spending and time limits independently of the results on the screen. Faster rounds can increase the number of wagers placed in a short period. Use responsible gambling for breaks and account controls.

Baccarat FAQs

What is the aim of baccarat?

In standard punto banco baccarat, you bet on whether the Player hand or Banker hand will finish closer to nine, or whether their totals will tie. Player and Banker are hand labels, not instructions to control the cards.

How are baccarat cards scored?

Aces count as one, cards two through nine count at face value, and tens and picture cards count as zero. Only the last digit of the total is used, so seven plus eight makes a baccarat total of five.

Do I choose whether to draw a third card?

Not in standard punto banco. Fixed drawing rules determine whether Player and Banker receive a third card. The rules are different from blackjack, where a player normally makes hit and stand decisions.

What is a natural in baccarat?

An initial two-card total of eight or nine is a natural. Under standard punto banco rules, a natural stops further drawing for both hands and the opening totals are compared.

Why is commission taken from a Banker win?

A standard commission game deducts a stated percentage, commonly 5%, from winning Banker profit as part of its payout structure. Confirm the rate and how it is collected in the particular game.

Does no-commission baccarat pay every Banker win at even money?

Not necessarily. A no-commission version can change the settlement of particular Banker outcomes. Evolution’s example pays winning Banker six at 0.5:1. Other versions need their own rules checked.

What happens to Player and Banker bets when the hands tie?

In a standard commission game they normally push, returning the main stake without profit. A separate Tie bet is resolved using its own payout. Variants may change settlement rules.

Can the baccarat road map predict the next hand?

It records previous results rather than guaranteeing what comes next. A visible streak or pattern does not make a future Player, Banker or Tie outcome certain, and changing stakes does not control the cards.

Are the casino offers on this page baccarat bonuses?

They are general welcome promotions, not verified baccarat-specific coupons. Check game availability and the current promotion’s eligibility, wagering contribution, maximum bet, expiry and withdrawal conditions.

What should I check before playing mobile baccarat?

Confirm the total stake, selected betting position, commission or conditional payouts, side bets and betting deadline. For a live stream, also read the interruption and confirmed-round history rules.
