Blackjack is a card game against the dealer: finish with the stronger total without going over 21. The basic idea is simple, but the table rules change what you can do and what a winning hand pays.

Before comparing a casino promotion, compare the game itself. The blackjack payout, soft-17 rule, doubling options and split restrictions are more useful than a table’s name or artwork. This guide explains those differences with worked examples and a checklist for reading the rules.

Blackjack basics: totals, aces and the dealer

Numbered cards have their printed value. A ten, jack, queen or king counts as ten. An ace can count as one or eleven, using the value that avoids a bust where possible. You compare your completed hand with the dealer’s, not the other players’ hands.

Hard total

A hand with no ace counted as eleven. Ten and seven is hard 17; ace, six and ten is also hard 17 because that ace must count as one.

Soft total

A hand with an ace counted as eleven. Ace and six is soft 17. Another card can change its total without necessarily making it bust.

Natural blackjack

Normally an initial ace plus a ten-value card. This is different from reaching 21 with three or more cards. Check the treatment of split hands and variant rules.

In conventional play, exceeding 21 loses the hand immediately. If your hand remains in play, the dealer follows the table’s drawing instructions and the final totals are compared. A tie normally returns the main stake as a push, subject to the rules of the version being played.

Bicycle’s blackjack rules provide a reference for the standard card values and basic flow. An online table can add or alter rules, so its own help panel is the deciding reference for that game.

What the blackjack buttons mean

Hit and stand

Hit requests another card. Stand ends your decisions on that hand at its current total. The choices available on a screen may change after a hit, after a split or once a decision timer runs out. Read the default-action rule if you are using a timed table.

Double down

Doubling adds a further stake to the hand and normally gives one final card. Some tables permit it on any initial two-card hand; others restrict totals or other circumstances. Check whether doubling after splitting is permitted and whether a reduced additional stake is allowed.

Split

When the rules permit a matching pair to be split, you create separate hands and add a stake for the new hand. Each hand then follows the applicable rules. Split aces commonly have special restrictions, and an ace plus ten after splitting may pay as an ordinary 21 rather than a natural.

Surrender

Where surrender is offered, it ends a qualifying hand with part of the stake forfeited. Its timing matters: early and late surrender do not describe the same rule. Do not assume a table offers it just because a strategy chart includes it.

Insurance and side bets

Insurance is a separate wager relating to dealer blackjack, not a refund plan for a poor main hand. Other side bets can use pairs, combinations or dealer outcomes. Each needs its own payout table and should be counted in the total round cost.

Count additional stakes

A $10 opening stake becomes $20 committed if you make a full double. Splitting it into two $10 hands also commits $20, and a permitted double on one split hand can raise that total again. A table minimum does not describe the maximum cost of completing the round.

The rules to compare before playing

Blackjack payout

Look for 3:2, 6:5 or another stated return on a natural. This is separate from the ordinary winning-hand payout and any side-bet schedule.

Dealer soft 17

Find whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17. “Stands on all 17s” and “hits soft 17” are different instructions.

Doubling rules

Check permitted opening totals, restrictions on soft hands and whether doubling remains available after a split.

Splitting rules

Check which cards can be split, how many hands can be created and what happens to split aces or a two-card 21.

Dealer blackjack

Understand when the dealer checks and what happens to additional split or double stakes if the dealer has a natural.

Decks and reshuffling

Read the number of decks and the stated dealing or reshuffling method. Do not infer these from a live video or a virtual shoe graphic.

MGM’s blackjack guide identifies payout and soft-17 variations. A conventional-looking layout therefore does not establish one universal rule set. The exact combination of rules affects the mathematical comparison.

We do not assign a blanket house-edge or RTP figure to every blackjack game. Such a figure needs the complete rules and assumptions about decisions. A percentage quoted for one version should not be transferred to another with a different payout or dealer rule.

Blackjack payouts: profit versus total returned

Profit is the amount won above the original stake. Total return includes the stake coming back. Keeping those separate makes payout comparisons much easier.

Ordinary 1:1 win

A winning $10 main bet earns $10 profit and returns $20 in total, including the original stake, where the rules pay even money.

Natural at 3:2

A qualifying $10 blackjack earns $15 profit and returns $25 in total. The ratio applies to the winning natural, not every hand totalling 21.

Natural at 6:5

The same qualifying $10 blackjack earns $12 profit and returns $22 in total. That is $3 less profit than 3:2 on the same stake.

These examples use the stated ratios, not a promise about a listed casino’s current table. BetMGM’s 3:2 and 6:5 comparison explains why checking the natural-blackjack payout matters.

A push normally returns the original stake without profit. If a game uses unusual ties, dealer-22 rules, multipliers or conditional payouts, read those before applying a standard example.

RNG, live and special blackjack formats

Software-dealt blackjack

An RNG version presents a software-generated game. Inspect its rules, stake controls and round history. The appearance of a deck animation does not establish whether cards are dealt from a continuing shoe or reset under another documented arrangement.

Live-dealer blackjack

A live format streams a dealer and table, with digital betting and decision controls. Seating, timers and connection handling can vary. Check the action required before the timer ends and what the game does if a connection is interrupted.

Shared-hand and feature variants

A table can use a shared initial hand or add special awards. Evolution’s Infinite Blackjack, for example, advertises unlimited seating, optional side bets and a Six Card Charlie rule. That illustrates why a variant needs its own rules; it does not confirm availability at the casinos above.

Some versions add multipliers, extra charges or modified settlement rules. Compare the cost and the full payout conditions rather than treating a familiar blackjack name as evidence that standard strategy and payouts apply unchanged.

Blackjack and casino bonuses

A game can be available for ordinary cash play yet prohibited during a particular coupon. An allowed table game may also contribute less than pokies toward wagering. Check the exact title and promotion, including restrictions on bet patterns or opposite outcomes.

For a hypothetical offer requiring $300 of credited wagering, a 10% contribution would require $3,000 of qualifying stakes under that simplified rule. A prohibited game is not simply a slow way to complete the requirement; playing it may breach the promotion.

Use the bonus hub to compare formats and the deposit-match guide to understand credit and caps. Keep maximum bets, expiry, balance treatment and withdrawal limits in the same comparison.

Practice, decisions and mobile play

When a virtual-credit practice mode is available, it can help you locate controls and follow the flow of a hand. Confirm that the practice and cash versions share the same rules before using the experience as a comparison. Practice results do not predict future returns.

A basic-strategy chart is specific to assumptions such as dealer rules, deck count and available actions. Use a chart that matches the actual game; do not fill gaps with a staking system. Increasing bets after losses changes your exposure rather than removing the house advantage.

On a phone, make sure the hit, stand, double and split controls are distinguishable and the total committed stake is visible. For live tables, check the decision timer and connection rules. The mobile guide covers device considerations.

Set spending and time limits before starting and keep essential money separate. If play stops being enjoyable or you find yourself chasing losses, use the controls and support information on our responsible gambling page.

Blackjack FAQs

What is the aim of blackjack?

In conventional blackjack, you try to finish with a higher hand total than the dealer without exceeding 21. You play against the dealer, not against the totals held by other players.

How much are the cards worth?

Number cards count at their face value, tens and picture cards count as ten, and an ace counts as one or eleven without making the hand bust. The ace’s usable value can change as cards are added.

What is a soft hand?

A soft hand contains an ace currently counted as eleven. Ace and six is soft 17; adding a ten changes the ace to one and makes the total hard 17. Whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17 depends on the table rules.

Is every total of 21 a blackjack?

No. A natural blackjack is normally an ace and a ten-value card in the initial two-card hand. A three-card 21 is an ordinary 21, and a two-card 21 after splitting is usually treated differently from a natural. Check the game rules.

What is the difference between 3:2 and 6:5?

These ratios describe the profit paid on a qualifying natural blackjack. On a $10 stake, 3:2 pays $15 profit and 6:5 pays $12 profit, with the original stake also returned. They do not describe the payout for every ordinary winning hand.

Can I double down or split every hand?

No. Doubling and splitting depend on the cards and the table’s rules. Check permitted totals, matching-card requirements, resplitting, split-ace restrictions and whether doubling after a split is allowed.

Does basic strategy guarantee that I win?

No. A strategy chart describes decisions for a specified rule set and mathematical assumptions. It does not control the cards, guarantee a session result or make every hand favourable.

Is blackjack insurance protection against all losses?

No. Insurance is a separate wager on the dealer having blackjack in the situation where it is offered. Its result and payout are separate from the outcome of the main hand.

Can I use the welcome offers listed here on blackjack?

Do not assume so. They are general casino promotions with designated spin components. Check the current coupon rules for blackjack eligibility, wagering contribution, maximum bets, excluded versions and withdrawal restrictions.

Can I play blackjack on a mobile browser?

Some blackjack versions support mobile browsers. Check device compatibility, the rules panel, total stake and decision timer before playing. Live tables also depend on a stable stream and the operator’s interruption rules.
